DerpyDrop2 by PixelKitties

No doubt you’ve all seen or heard the hullabaloo around Ye Olde Intertubes in the days and weeks following our beloved Derpy’s named appearance in the FIM episode The Last Roundup.  What began as a campaign by trolls wreak havoc was soon picked up by well-meaning-but-misguided bronies and fans.  The controversy stems from the mistaken belief that the word “derpy” is synonymous with mentally challenged.  Obviously, it’s not.  Rather it means clutzy or accident prone.  Further, fans maintained that her slightly-husky voice in the episode was an attempt to mock people with learning disabilities.  Again, untrue.  Voiced by actor Tabitha St. Germain, Derpy was mistakenly thought to be a boy pony and was based on a young boy who lives next door to Ms. St. Germain.

This tempest in a teapot stirred up around the fandom has now exploded into what seems to be a PR-pushback by Hasbro.  While much of the recent actions around Derpy and The Last Roundup are themselves still cloaked in rumor and conjecture, at this point it seems that the episode has been taken down from Itunes.  Further, it appears that super-awesome T-Shirt company We Love Fine has been given the directive to drop their Derpy shirts, at the very least, featuring Derpy’s name.

Enough is, frankly, enough.  We can’t allow trolling and misplaced butthurt to tarnish the reputation of our beloved, wall-eyed Pegasus.  We fans have a special love for Derpy, and it was a moment of wonder and joy when our friends at Studio B named her and featured her based on our feedback and support.  Now it’s our turn to step up and do what’s right.

Head over to We Love Fine and support our favorite clumsy pony by  purchasing one of the lovely and well-made Derpy designs  Let’s show Hasbro that we support Derpy and we don’t want them to change a hair on her adorable little head.

If you can’t afford a shirt right now, then do your part and contact We Love Fine and Hasbro, and let them know how much you love and support Derpy.  Don’t let the parasprites win.  This is the time to stand up and show your support for Derpy and our friends at Studio B.

UPDATE- Normally I don't put much stock in internet petitions, but in this case it seems a valid way to make, if not our voices, our number known-…

UPDATE2- Just to avoid saying the same thing  repeatedly in replies- No, nothing is 100% confirmed right now, but what I've posted today is based on NEW information from within the past two or three hours- and it looks pretty damn reliable.  That said, even if nothing is actually happening, it doesn't change the fact that plenty of angry, misguided, or outright trolling individuals have made it a point to voice their displeasure to our friends at Hasbro and are directing plenty of negativity towards the  cast and crew at Studio B.  This is our chance to counteract that- whether it's preemptive or a response to current events isn't the point, rather it's a matter of showing support for the character, the great people at We Love Fine,  and the amazing, wonderful artists who bring us Friendship is Magic.  We do that by supporting them with both our numbers and wallets.

The name Derpy originated on 4chan. You really think the denizens of that pit meant it as "clutzy"? Hell just Google image Derp, are those pictures of accident prone people?
Derpy = Retarded and it's a stupid name that doesn't fit in the show either way.

Ditzy Doo ftw

Honestly, what I think we're dealing with is a very vocal minority, kinda like the tea party. And (hopefully) like the tea party, it will soon die down and not really have any effect. Like Chef and AC say, it's just a show. If you don't like it, just remind yourself of this. It's seriously no big deal, and just be glad that Studio B is putting the effort that they currently are. My sister was pretty vocal about the whole Derpy vs Ditzy thing, and I just told her this. She took it in stride, and just dealt with it. If we could all remind ourselves of this more often, maybe we wouldn't have to deal with so many parasprites and misguided fans. Let's just all be a little more... well... harmonious.

I always preferred Ditzy Doo, but I can deal with Derpy. There's nothing wrong. I was slightly disappointed the way the added her and used a silly name in the show.

BUT DAMN who the hell went out and got all butthurt and made this fandom look EVEN WORSE than it already does. DX Guh, they did it, they didn't mean anything bad with it obviously.

Let save Derpy's name is better!

Why minor hate Derpy's name? -.-; There major fans who love Derpy than minor!

Okay, I feel like I earned my name hear, because I really never saw such a backlash coming. My friends and I watch MLP:FiM every Saturday, eager to see how the world is furthered and the characters are given further depth, including "background ponies". When Derpy made her appearance we all cheered. She lived up to all our expectations... she was a good-natured klutz and a little oblivious. Now I find that some trolls were offended by this very character nature, misinterpreting for a mental disability, and even attacking the name Derpy... bronies came up with that name for Celestia's sake! Also complaining about her voice... Rainbow Dash's voice is the very reason I thought she was a dude for the first couple episodes.

Congratulations trolls, you judged everyone involved in the production after one minute of Derpy, losing sight of the many episodes where they delivered above and beyond. If the title "Brony" implies tolerance and understanding, these trolls don't deserve the title. I'm definitely disappointed in this and will do whatever I can to help the community in fixing this.

I'm a Brony standing with Depry.

Thanks PixelKitties and everyone for being on her side too.

I had issues with the voice but I'd much rather she stay as she is than be removed from the show as a speaking character.
Dauntess Featured By Owner Feb 2, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
99% of people I know who have an issue with derpy are not trolls or misguided and are indeed massive fans of the show. It's also mostly over the name. Doesn't matter if you all choose to believe it or not but derp/y is used as a derogatory term towards disabled people even if it's not the more common meaning. Hasbro obviously doesn't want to be seen as mocking disabled people so I doubt it will matter how many tshirts are bought or how much fanart there is. Their concerns are keeping good brand publicity and their target market happy.

Dang, I wish I could afford a Derpy shirt right now. I'm just glad I got Last Round Up in iTunes before it got pulled down. Got it backed up in a safe place.

You know, there are times in this community I beam with pride. The charity support, the fandom art and music, and even the get togethers. It's all out of goodwill and friendship, something the internet had been lacking up till now.

But then there are times like this. And whether its the fandom itself or just some trolls, I can only hope and pray that Hasbro can look past the few idiots who cry and taunt.

Thanks to Studio B for bringing us Derpy and more thanks for incorporating her into the show! I really hope we get to se more of her!
Fadflamer Featured By Owner Feb 2, 2012
Good god. What the hell have I been missing?

I still can't grasp how big of a deal this has blown up into. Granted, I can't really grasp how Hasbro would really be able to do much of anything on the surface level, but are they really giving the animation crew hell about it?

I hope it gets resolved by people who are capable of knowing how to pick out the bullshit from the sensible collective.

Man, why's errybody hating on Derpy's clumsy moe? Shit's ridiculous.

Is there any evidence that anti-brony trolls are a major factor in the anti-Derpy movement? The people I've seen posting complaints on the internet seem pretty sincere, but that certainly doesn't mean there haven't been others behind the scenes using this just to spite bronies.
cowboywolfmanboy Featured By Owner Feb 2, 2012
The fact that stupid fans are even affecting the show itself in any way is infuriating.
Tervicz Featured By Owner Feb 2, 2012
I think if you keep Derpy in the front row of fanon she should be safe. She was fanon first after all. Draw her and keep calling her Derpy hooves. And if the worst would happen and Hasbro did kill her, draw her even more. If need be, make her not only prominent in internet but even on street view.

I'm thinking about jumping ship from the fandom for about a week, maybe give some time for every brony to settle down. It seems just like a messed up game of telephone between us, Hasbro, non-bronies, and trolls. I'm sure this will all get resolved somehow. People are at least trying to be rational in the wake of uncertainty.

Otherwise, I was actually thinking of buying a Derpy design from the folks at We Love Fine. More specifically, Derpy 209. Lick-O-Derm (c) muffin patch. Hehehe. I apologize for my crappy mouse drawing. I'm too lazy for a pen tool or tablet right now. Oh lawd.

What hacks me off most about this is the fact that cartoons have been getting laughs off of klutzy, cross-eyed, silly-voiced characters for decades, and yet it hasn't been a problem until now. The way I see it, the only reason why it is a problem now is because a small but vocal group of individuals have chosen to make it a problem, and in doing so, have completely disregarded possibly the biggest nod to and acknowledgement of this fan base by the show's creators that has happened so far. Quite sad, really. Here's hoping cooler, more rational heads prevail. In the meantime, I believe I'll pay WeLoveFine a visit....

I'm against it (changing her name to Ditzy or anything else for that matter) on the premises that its political correctness being pushed in our face, can't possibly offend anyone even if it was by a miss understanding or misconception of its intended use. Let's say it was intentional and specifically set up to be the representation of a mentally challenged pony would it be wrong to have her there. I could write more but what it really comes down to is if your biggest concern at the end of the day is the name and demeanor of a pony on a TV show, let me trade places with you.

I bought a Derpy t-shirt 4 months ago, so I'm good!
I do think that there's alot of misdirected hate being tossed around, but I did find Hasbro's display of Derpy in bad taste at first. Yes, yes, all the facts are in front of me, and I can forgive the mistake, but I did cringe when I heard Derpy's "odd" voice for the first time.

So, people are upset because they thought it was offensive? Well funnily enough, I think I was one of them.

But now that I've read an opposing view, that seems more informed then mine, I've completely 180ed. Seriously. I think you're right.

I didn't even know there was a real controversy until now. It's been nearly two weeks!! Why are people so late to the game!?

Oh man...this was hard for me to read. I was a peer tutor in my 8th grade year, and on several occasions worked with individuals who had mental disabilities. So, it really hurt me when I first realized what Derpy Hooves was. Or, rather, what she wasn't. This journal was a real relief to me, but it just makes me think, "do we really even think whenever we call someone retarded?"
BlackWidower Featured By Owner Feb 2, 2012  Professional Writer
When I first heard her, my first thought was: "She sounds like she had Down Syndrome." I think I was wrong on that though.
pj202718 Featured By Owner Feb 2, 2012
I signed it and hope that it shuts up all the damned trolls. Otherwise she might:

a) vanish from the series all together
b) end up with a deliberately higher-pitched voice coming out of her mouth
c) end up with a deliberately cuted-up name in order to appease the butt-hurt brigade.

None of those are especially desirable; neither is the insinuation that she must be an ableist caricature because she's slow on the uptake, clumsy and sort of scatter-brained. If she is then so are Sailor Fricking Moon, Daphne G-D Blake and Phoebe from Friends.
bobdat Featured By Owner Feb 2, 2012

And are these people really bronies? 'Cause here's something one of my friends told me:

"If they were bronies, they'd know about Derpy's origins."

...well, there ya go. That's something to think about, isn't there? These can't be fans. If they are, they've performed a terrible sin.

Yeah, yeah, I know everyone's entitled to their opinion, but putting the pressure on Hasbro to remove any mention of Derpy is just plain wrong. Hang those trolls and traitors!

Look... if those of the Hub knows that Derpy was the favourite of Background Pony, and waitet after the episode for the response of the fan community, there were a 90% of them really AMAZED just because she talked. No one cared about her voice, i don't care even now. i'm really happy that a little error of animation has stolen the episode from a main character. THe word Derp for me is funny to say, and i NEVER thought that is synonymous with mentally challenged.
There are a lots of character like her. the Most famous? Goofy. No one cares about how it talks or that he looks like a feather brain. Is funny and is a cartoon character. that's all. Now, throw at those trolls some muffins !!!! :iconderpy-plz:
