Averted a depression - Yeah, the unemployment rate stayed at 9% for the longest time, but with the Republican idea to keep away from bailing out other companies, this could have easily become a depression if John McCain won.
Sparked a recovery - Well, the unemployment rate is now at about 7.9%.
Bailed out Detroit - This may seem like a bad decision, but if he didn't do that, Chrysler and GM would have gone out of business which would have triggered a parts manufacturer collapse which likely would have taken Ford under as well leaving millions more unemployed.
Pushed through Healthcare Reform - Maybe not as much as we hoped, but it's still a big deal.
Legalized Stem Cell Research - This could cure so many diseases.
Got us out of Iraq and Afghanistan responsibly - Granted Afghanistan took more time than it should have, but it's still a good thing.
Perhaps the fact that he promised so much in the 2008 election is why we look at Barack Obama as a disappointment. Politifact.com gathered 508 promises that Obama made. He has kept 217 of them, while he broke 112 of them (106 were compromises). [link]
Really for his first term, the Republicans were just blocking everything he did, then on election day, blaming it on him. There are two signs of hope though. One is that Dad said that the New Right movement, which came to prominence in the 80's with Ronald Regan, peaked in 2010. He feels like they've alienated much of their outside support. The second sign is the fact that Obama can no longer get elected president. Therefore, Republicans have no point in opposing everything he does.
